- This version of Words is shareware, if you use the program and would like a
- fully functional version then send £5.00 ( sterling ) to me at the address
- given at the top of this page.
-
- Restrictions
- ------------
- To encourage people to register with me and obtain the latest version of
- Words, along with the latest glossary set, I have restricted this version
- so that it can only read in up to 1O,OOO words.
-
- Function
- --------
- Words was written to assist puzzle fanatics. It can find anagrams of a
- given word, make words from a given word and also guess at a word of which
- only a few letters are known. Thus Words is an ideal tool to help
- solve/create crosswords and other similar puzzles.
-
- Usage
- -----
- The program can be started from the Workbench by 'double-clicking' on its
- icon and from the CLI by entering its name, no parameters required.
-
- The program starts by loading the glossary. This takes a while so a window
- is displayed that informs the user. Once the glossary has been loaded the
- work screen is displayed.
-
- From the main screen, all functions are carried out by selecting the
- appropriate gtadget.
-
- Functions
- =========
-
- When the program is first started, the MATCH function is selected. This is
- obvious from the display ( I hope ) as the MATCH gadget is displayed in
- opposite colours to the other gadgets.
-
- At the top left of the screen is the entry gadget. A cursor will appear
- in this gadget when the program first starts and also after hitting any
- other gadget ( except QUIT ). If, for some reason, the cursor is not
- visible, click in the white box.
-
- Here is an explanation of each gadgets function:
-
- ENTRY Type in the word ( string ) to be processed here.
- Hitting return will generate a list of solutions
- in the white box to the right of the display.
-
- MATCH Selects the Match Word option ( detailed below ).
-
- ANAGRAM Selects the Anagram option ( detailed below ).
-
- MAKE Selects the Make Word option ( detailed below ).
-
- UP/DOWN ARROW Use these to scroll through the list of solutions
- displayed in the white box to the right of the
- screen. NOTE, as the solution list may be quite
- large the scroll function is FAST.
-
- ABOUT Displays a window which contains my address and
- the shareware notice. Close this window by
- 'Clicking' in the OK gadget at the bottom.
-
- QUIT Need I explain this !
-
- Here is an explanation of the three options available at present:
-
- Match Words
- -----------
-
- Enter the pattern for the word you require in the ENTRY gadget. The pattern
- should consist of alphabetic characters and question marks. Use question
- marks for any unknown letters. Pressing RETURN will produce a list in the
- white box of all words that match the given pattern.
-
- For instance, if you enter the pattern:
-
- a?l?
-
- the program will display something similar to the following:
-
- ABLE
- AXLE
-
- Should the program not find any words that match the given pattern then
- no list will be displayed.
-
- Anagrams
- --------
-
- Enter a word in the ENTRY gadget that you would like to find anagrams of.
- Pressing RETURN will produce a list in the white box of all anagrams of the
- given word. You can then scroll through this list using the UP/DOWN arrow
- gadgets next to the white box.
-
- For instance, if you enter the word:
-
- mode
-
- the program will display something similar to the following:
-
- DEMO
- MODE
-
- Should the program not find any anagrams for the given word then no list
- will be printed.
-
- Make Words
- ----------
-
- Type a word into the ENTRY gadget. Pressing RETURN will produce a list in
- the white box of all words that can be made from the given word.
-
- For instance, if you enter the word:
-
- matter
-
- the program will display a list similar to:
-
- MATE
- RATE etc.
-
- Should the program not be able to form any words from the given word then
- no list is displayed.

- About The Glossary
- ==================
-
- The glossary used by Words is stored on disc in a number of files, each
- containing up to 5000 words. To minamise disc space these files have been
- crunched using PowerPacker. Words can read the glossaries whether crunched
- or not.
-
- The glossaries on disc are named as follows:
-
- GlosA, GlosB, GlosC, GlosD, ....... , GlosZ
-
- To add words to the glossary, load the last glossary from disc ( glosB with
- the shareware version ) into a text editor. New words must be typed in UPPER
- case, only one word per line.
-
- CAUTION : NO GLOSSARY MUST EXCEED 5000 WORDS - A GURU IS THE RESULT OF
- IGNORING THIS.
-
- The Fututre
- ===========
-
- Should I be told of any bugs in Words, I will try to correct them.
- Registered users will be informed and the corrected version made available
- to them F.O.C.
-
- Whenever the library grows by a signifigant amount registered users will be
- informed. I am not sure how I am going to deal with this yet !
-
- I intend to build up glossaries in other languages, French and German will
- come first. These will be made available to registered users.
-
- I intend to add a spell checking program to Words. This will not come for a
- few months yet, but will only be made available to registered users.
-
- So as you can see, it's probably worth registering.
-
- History
- =======
-
- Words started life as three seperate programs. These were very rough and
- slow. They were made available on Amiganuts Disc 899 and even got small
- reviews in three Amiga magazines ( that I saw anyway ). To say I was
- supprised is the least of it, I wrote these programs as an exercise for
- myself, not to be of real use to anyone.
-
- Well I forgot all about these programs until I received a letter from a
- Mr Derrick Carter telling me the Anagram program was bugged ( Whoops ! )
- and an extention to the glossary supplied with the original version. So
- inspiring was Mr Carter's letter that I decided to do a total re-write.
- You now have a copy of that re-write......

-
- I must also mention that Words relies on two libraries:
-
- PowerPacker by Nico Francois
- ARP by ??? ( apologies to the authors )
-
- If you are a programmer and would like more info on these libraries then
- send a disc and sae to me. I can supply the released Docs for both and also
- sample assembler source of mine.
-
- I may also be persuaded into releasing the assembler source for Words.
